Lent is 40 weekdays long excluding Sundays, so as to be in an attitude and posture of praise on the Lord's Day. This year, Lent started on Ash Wednesday(Feburary 17, 2010)and will end on (Sat. April 3, 2010). From Biblical times until today, sprinkling one's self with ashes has been symbolic of personal humility and remorse for sin. The Hebrew word for fasting is "aw-nah" which means to afflict our souls to the point of mourning over our own spiritual health as well as the spiritual health of others. God the Father places a very high priority on humility and obedience. Jesus humbled Himself and He was obedient unto death on the cross for us. During Lent we are to humble ourselves, as we excercise self-denial, prayer and fasting. Lent is a spiritual posture, as we recall the great self-denial, passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ on Good Friday's cross for our sins. During Lent much of the world turns it's attention to the cross of Jesus upon which the sinless one died for the sinner, so that the sinner could potentially be restored, it's our choice - spiritual death or resurrection. To those who reject Jesus, the cross looks like a barrier at the end of a dead end street. But to us who follow Jesus and accept His sacrifice, the cross is a huge plus sign silhouetted against the sky. To us, the cross of Jesus is a plus sign that declares (ICor 1:18)" that the power of God has been added to human life" and we can live life more abundantly today. Oh Yes, Christmas is the season but Good Friday is eternally the reason. Thank You Jesus.
